The Library of Congress Teaching With Primary Sources Midwest Region

The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Midwest Region at Illinois State University, located within Milner LIbrary, was created by the Educational Outreach Division Library of Congress. Funding for the Midwest Region comes from he Library of Congress to expand the Teaching with Primary Sources program throughout the Midwest. Opportunities to lead state-wide or local professional development efforts and to impact pre-service teacher training related to the use of primary sources are provided by the Midwest Region in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois*, Indiana*, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana*, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee*, and Wisconsin.

*Please note that proposals from these states will be directed to one of the existing TPS partners whenever possible. Please contact our office (resatch@ilstu.edu) before submitting proposals from institutions within these states.

The Midwest Region is seeking proposals from higher educational institutions, state boards of education, regional educational systems, non-profit organizations, cultural institutions and similar organizations that can provide professional development for in-service teachers and/or librarians and training for pre-service students in teacher education programs. Proposals that have a measurable impact on the integration of primary sources from the Library of Congress and are sustainable in the future by matching or in-kind funds from local institutions/organizations are highly encouraged.

The Midwest Region offers two types of awards to successful applicants. Type I awards, in the amount of $2,000 - $5,000, will require the modification of existing pre-service curricula to include the integration of primary sources from the Library of Congress. Type II awards, in the amount of $2,000 - $15,000, will require the training of in-service teachers and/or library information specialists using an established professional development program that meets the goals of the TPS Level I program. Those seeking more information about this program are encouraged to visit the following link and download a request for proposals: http://www.mlb.ilstu.edu/tps/ MCTPS/RFP/RFP_2010.pdf

Successful projects will be provided a professional development guide for all K-16 professional development activities. A copy of the guide can be downloaded for review by all applicants at:  http://www.library.ilstu.edu/aam/MCTPS/pdguide_intro.htm
