Guide to Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes assigned to establishments by the federal government. Used to identify the industries in which firms operate. Also available online as Standard Industrial Classification Search from OSHA, which permits online searching by keyword or number.

Statistical Abstract of the United States and print (Floor 2 Information Desk Ref HA 202)
Data on all subjects collected by all branches of the federal government. Includes sources for all data presented. Section 15 covers Business Enterprises.
Economic Census - Bureau of the Census.
Data is arrayed by SIC or NAICS code, depending upon the year. Useful for number of establishments, production levels, sales, and market share. Conducted every five years (2002 is the latest). Use the electronic reports accessible from the Economic Census Web page.
Census of Agriculture 2002 Census, 1992 and 1997 PDF data files and (A 92.53/ - Floor 4, Documents)
Similar to the Economic Census; conducted by the Department of Agriculture to provide data on agricultural production. It covers farming but excludes agricultural services, forestry, and fisheries.

EconLit / Index of Economic Articles (Z 7164 .E2 I48) and Journal of Economic Literature (HB 1 .J6)
The Index of Economic Articles lists articles in major economic journals and in collective volumes. Includes all articles published in English or with English summaries in the journals and books cited. The Index is kept current by the Journal of Economic Literature. The first section of the JEL is articles, the second is an annotated listing of new books, and the third is contents of current periodicals, and the fourth is a subject index of all article listings with a classification system. There is also an author index. The online version is called EconLit. An outline for the classification code is available online from the American Economic Association.

The set consists of two sections: industry/product and company. The industry/product section begins with a section on the economy, with the remainder arranged by major industry groups using a modified SIC number system. An alphabetical guide to SIC numbers appears at the front of the volume. The company section is arranged alphabetically by company name. Each index contains information from hundreds of financial publications, business oriented newspapers, trade magazines, and special reports. Topics covered include acquisitions and mergers, new products, technological developments, operating results, and social and political factors affecting business. Available in paper copy only.
