At the end of the first library session, students will be able to:

Explain the nature of academic research/scholarship by:

  • recognizing the importance of being information literate; being able to effectively locate, use, and evaluate
  • information in an academic setting.
  • recognizing that the need for information extends beyond the classroom
  • distinguishing between the student’s incoming research practices and research skills required in an academic setting
  • distinguishing between resources found on the Internet and those found in an academic library
  • applying the information cycle to select the most appropriate form of resource(s) for an information need(s)
  • Demonstrates his/her ability by:

    • articulating the difference between academic and non-academic research
    • describing academic or scholarly publishing
    • analyzing the results of an Internet search on a topic
    • articulating the differences between a scholarly journal, a magazine or newspaper article and a book
