| Importing citations from the Milner Catalog has been restored [posted 9/30/09] In August the organization that coordinates our library catalog and the catalog of other Illinois academic libraries changed the catalog to its previous version, the version in use prior to the Summer 2009 upgrade. As a result, it is again possible to save citations from the Milner Catalog to your RefWorks account. See Importing (Milner) Catalog Records into RefWorks for directions using the Classic version of the catalog. | Importing citations from the Milner Catalog has been temporarily disabled Upgrade of the software that runs the Milner Catalog began on June 14. Work on the upgrade will continue throughout the summer, with completion expected by the start of the fall semester. Until the upgrade is complete, some functions available in the old version of the catalog will be unavailable. These include the ability to save citations and then import them into your RefWorks account. The staff of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois is responsible for the upgrade and continues to work on a fix to the problem with RefWorks. Information about the fix will be posted here when complete. | APA 6th Edition has been loaded into RefWorks The American Psychological Association released the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, aka APA Manual, on July 1. RefWorks staff is in the process of making the new edition available to RefWorks users.
To view the new APA 6th Edition, use the Output Style Manager and add it as a favorite in your RefWorks account. You can find the Output Style Manager in the Tools section of the RefWorks menu.
Here’s information about APA 6th Edition from the RefWorks Technical Services Team:
“APA 6th style is not a major change from APA 5th output style. The new version does not use the database name with the exception of ERIC documents (reports). We have removed the database field from all reference types with the exception of reports.
The new edition of APA has changed the manner in which authors are to be listed in the text and in the reference list. The new reference list guidelines state that when there are seven or more authors there should only be seven authors presented. When there are more than seven authors the first six are to be listed, ellipses added after the sixth, and the last author added at the end. In order for RefWorks to adhere to these changes, we will need to make modifications to our current Output Style Editor which will require program development. In the short-term, our new APA style will list all authors and will require the user to manually remove the extra authors and add the ellipses.
The new guidelines allow for the inclusion of up to five authors in the first instance of an in-text citation and the use of the first author with ‘et al.’ in all subsequent citations of the same reference. This too, will require APA specific development in RefWorks.
We realize this is not an ideal solution and apologize for this inconvenience. We will be working with our development team to address these issues as quickly as possible and hope to have the necessary program changes loaded within the near future. The reason that we are posting the style before the program development can be completed is to give our users a chance to review the style and to send us their input and suggestions with the intent of having an accurate and comprehensive presentation of the 6th prior to the next academic term.” Feel free to send your comments, concerns, suggestions to Bruce Stoffel at Milner Library. Bruce will in turn pass them along to the RefWorks technical team. | Direct export from Google Scholar has been restored The direct export feature in Google Scholar has been restored by Google staff. To enable the direct export feature, use the Scholar Preferences link to the right of the search box. Then select RefWorks in the Bibliography Manager field on the Scholar Preferences page. Remember to save your preferences. Once your preferences have been set, citations retrieved by Google Scholar when you are working on that computer will include Import into RefWorks links. | Direct export from Google Scholar is temporarily disabled The direct export feature in Google Scholar has been temporarily disabled by Google. Google staff is aware of the problem and is seeking a fix. In the meantime, to export Google Scholar citations into your RefWorks account, use the FindIt@ISU links associated with each citation, then use the "Download Record into RefWorks Direct Export Tool" that appears in the FindIt menu. To display FindIt@ISU links in Google Scholar, use the Library Links feature in your Scholar Preferences (access your Scholar Preferences using the link to the right of the search box). | MLA 7th now available in RefWorks MLA released the 7th edition of its MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers in March. The new edition has been loaded into RefWorks. To view the new style use the Output Style Manager and add it as a favorite for your account. | RefWorks Enhancements effective April 20 [From RefWorks-COS Announces Feature Release Update, dated April 10, 2009] "RefMobile is a version of RefWorks for mobile and smart phones, as well as PDAs, that allows you to access and view your references, manage folders and even add information to the Notes field of your references. In addition to being able to access and manage your references, RefMobile has a feature – SmartAdd – that will search the web for references based on a digital object identifier (DOI), PubMed ID (PMID), PubMed Central ID (PMCID), ISSN/ISBN number or by author and publication year or even search using part of a title. References located by SmartAdd can even be imported into your RefWorks account via RefMobile. Any user can access RefMobile at www.refworks.com/mobile." "RefWorks has added a new capability that allows any output style to be configured to include dynamically created OpenURL links in bibliography formatting. This new option is available within the Output Style Editor. You will now find an Add OpenURL Link to Output option listed in the Fields for this Type column. Simply add this field to any defined reference type (like you would with any other field) and when you format a paper, the OpenURL link (based on your Organization’s OpenURL definition) is automatically created and inserted with the bibliography." "After creating a new folder, you will now be returned to whatever page you were on before the folder was created, as opposed to remaining on the Create New Folder page. This enhancement makes it easier to get back to what you were originally working on prior to creating a folder."
| Glitch reported when exporting citations from Ovid databases to RefWorks Searchers of PsycINFO, ERIC, and other Ovid databases available through Milner Library have reported an inconvenience when trying to export citations into RefWorks. They report being able to successfully execute the direct export function in the Ovid database. However, the new browsing window that opens to the RefWorks login page cannot be resized. We have reported this problem to both Ovid and RefWorks technical support staff. Until the problem is resolved, you can use the following work around (in Internet Explorer). To resize the RefWorks browsing window, hit the F11 command key. The RefWorks window will then take over your computer screen. Use the Shift F11 command to downsize the RefWorks window. The downsized window can then be resized. | EndNote Web is now available Milner Library patrons who already use EndNote or would like to use EndNote instead of RefWorks now have access to the web version of EndNote, known as EndNote Web. Like RefWorks, EndNote Web accounts may be accessed anywhere via the Internet. EndNote citations can be imported into EndNote Web and vice versa. RefWorks citations can be imported into EndNote Web and vice versa. You can access EndNote Web via the Web of Science database available through Milner Library. See the Web of Science link on the Milner Library homepage or on the Milner Library databases page. Once in Web of Science use the My EndNote Web button in the page banner. | Using RefGrab-It RefWorks includes a tool called RefGrab-It used to capture citation information about web pages for importing into your RefWorks account. For example, if you wanted to cite the web page you are now reading, you could use the RefGrab-It tool to capture information about this page and import the information into RefWorks for use in creating bibliographies and writing papers. To use RefGrab-It, you first need to download it onto your web browser. Once RefGrab-It has been installed on your browser, you can click the tool while viewing the web page you want to cite. The tool will open RefWorks, into which you can import the web page citation information. You can download RefGrab-It from the Tools menu in RefWorks. | Using RefWorks with the JSTOR database If you are a JSTOR searcher, you can export individual JSTOR citations to RefWorks by using the "Export this Citation" link adjacent to each citation on the Search Results page. However, to export more than one citation at a time, you will need to first create a personal JSTOR account. You can get to the account registration page by using the "Save citation(s)" button that appears above the search results. | Using RefWorks with the Web of Science database Web of Science does not have an option to direct export records into RefWorks. Instead you need to use the import function in RefWorks to bring citations into RefWorks from Web of Science. Here's how. In your Web of Science results display ... Select your records. Select the format you want. Leave the last option at Save to other Reference Software and click Save. On the following screen, click Save. Save as text (.txt) file to Desktop. Then in RefWorks ... From the References menu, select Import. Import Filter: select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information). Database: select Web of Science. From Import data from the following Text File, browse to choose your text file. Click Import. References are imported into the Last Imported Folder. | For more assistance Contact Bruce Stoffel or Anita Foster at Milner Library. |
