Creating your RefWorks account
| RefWorks is freely available to Illinois State University students, faculty, and staff members. To use RefWorks, you first need to create your personal account. The way this is done differs depending on whether you are physically located on campus or are off campus at the time you create your account. |
Creating your account: ON CAMPUS | | Start on the Milner Library RefWorks page. Select "RefWorks User Login" under "RefWorks Links." On the login page that displays, you should see a box headed "RefWorks User Login for Illinois State University." If you do not see such a box, STOP. Proceed to the directions below for creating your account while off campus. If you see such a box, use the "Sign up for an Individual Account" link. Provide the required information on the form that appears. Your registration will then be complete. You will receive an introductory email shortly after creation of your account. | | | Creating your account: OFF CAMPUS | Start on the Milner Library RefWorks page. Select "RefWorks User Login" under "RefWorks Links." The login page that displays should have three tabs. Use the "Remote access" tab. Enter the ISU group code. You can find the group code linked from the Milner Library RefWorks page. You will need to enter your ULID and password to view the code. Once you have entered the group code in the "Remote access" tab, you should see a login box headed "RefWorks User Login for Illinois State University." If so, use the "Sign up for an Individual Account" link in that box. Provide the required information on the form that appears. Your registration will then be complete. You will receive an introductory email shortly after creation of your account. | | | Important notes about your account | | Using the appropriate method to create your RefWorks account is critical. Make sure the login box you see at the time you create your account mentions Illinois State University. If it does not, the account you establish will not be associated with our ISU group, it will lack the full complement of functions available to ISU RefWorks account holders, and, most importantly, it will automatically expire 30 days after its creation. If you have problems registering, contact Bruce Stoffel at Milner Library for assistance. Your log-in name and password are not tied to your ULID and password. You might choose to use your ULID as your RefWorks log-in name and the associated password as your RefWorks password. However, when you change the password associated with your ULID, it will not automatically change the password associated with your RefWorks account. If you want to keep your passwords consistent, you will need to change your RefWorks password manually each time your change your ULID password. You can do so by logging into your RefWorks account and using the "Update User Information" selection in the "Tools" menu. You are not restricted to just one RefWorks account. Our RefWorks subscription allows each ISU student, faculty, and staff member multiple accounts. If you are working on a group project, you might consider creating an account just for that project and sharing your log-in name and password for the account with your colleagues. That is perfectly acceptable. When you attempt to access RefWorks while off campus, you will need to enter the ISU group code. The code is included in the introductory email you receive from RefWorks at the time you register. The ISU group code is also linked from the Milner Library RefWorks page. |
