Courtesy Card Policy

Milner Library’s Courtesy Card service provides the opportunity to borrow materials housed by the library and to a limited number of other resources and services available through Milner Library.* This service is provided free as a courtesy to community members wanting to borrow materials from Milner Library.

Once the application form has been processed, the patron will be issued a white Courtesy Card with a Milner Library identification number and patron address. The department will process a Courtesy Card during normal business hours (Monday-Friday from 8am until 3:30pm). The card should be available to the patron within one hour of submitting the application form. Occasionally, there may be times when circumstances prevent prompt processing of applications. However, it is the goal of Access Services to process the cards so the patron will then be allowed same day check-out of Milner Library materials.

Eligibility & Privileges:

  • Illinois residents from McLean County, the surrounding counties (Ford, Piatt, Dewitt, Logan, Tazewell, Woodford, and Livingston) as well as patrons from the Alliance Library System (ALS) area are eligible for a Milner Library issued Courtesy Card. Applicants must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • The standard borrowing loan period is four weeks. Some materials, from collections such as the Teaching Materials Center (TMC), have shorter loan periods.

    * Certain items are not available for check-out to the Courtesy Card holder, for example: materials from the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and Special Collections.

  • A Courtesy Card holder may have up to ten items checked-out at one time. In order to check-out items from Milner, the patron will have to show their Courtesy Card and a picture ID.
  • Courtesy Card holders may not renew an item. Each item must be returned directly to Milner Library in person, or delivered by the U.S. Postal service by the due date.
  • It is the responsibility of the card holder to honor any recall of an item due to high demand, returning it immediately to Milner Library.
  • Courtesy Cards from any other library or public library cards will not be honored at Milner Library.
  • Courtesy Card holders are not eligible for any type of interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan services are available through our statewide library consortium and public libraries throughout the state.
  • Courtesy Card holders are not eligible to use any computer lab on campus.
  • The Courtesy Card will be valid for one year from the date of issue.
  • Milner Library reserves the right to grant, deny or revoke a Courtesy Card at any time.

Requirements:

  1. Must provide a state of Illinois picture identification card (license or state issued ID), or a passport showing an Illinois address within the designated boundaries.
  2. To renew the card, the patron must show an acceptable picture identification card confirming the existing contact information.
  3. o The patron will be required to show an approved picture ID to verify the contact information from the original request form.
o If the address from the picture identification has changed, the patron will be required to fill-out a new request form.
  4. After five years, the patron will be required to fill-out a new request form in order to update Milner Library’s patron records.

Confidentiality:

  • Courtesy Card applications and borrowing records for the card holder are kept confidential.
