Library Instruction Vision, Mission, Competencies and PoliciesVisionIllinois State University is acclaimed as an outstanding example of an information literate and intellectually vibrant academic community. Students develop information competence in both general and specific areas of study through library instruction and the integration of information skills throughout the curriculum and in support of lifelong learning. Milner Library faculty and staff work in collaboration with other university faculty and staff to implement information literacy instruction while also continuing to develop their own competence with information in specific disciplinary areas. Patrons value Milner Library for providing leadership of campus initiatives that support information literacy. MissionMilner Library's Instruction Program exists to advance the information literacy of the students, faculty, and staff at Illinois State University and the community at large. To this end, the Instruction Program teaches library users to search for, locate, retrieve, evaluate, use, and value information resources through learner-centered instructional programs, initiatives, and materials. These are developed in response to identified learning needs and through collaboration with campus faculty and staff. The Program provides independent, individual, and group instruction through point-of-use, course-integrated, web-based, and open workshop methods. The Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education from the Association of College and Research Libraries provide the framework for program development and instructional objectives. The Instruction Program supports the missions of Milner Library and Illinois State University.
