Numerous college directories are available in the Reference Section on Floor 1 of Milner Library.  Most can be located by using the Online Catalog and searching the Subject Heading Universities and colleges--United States--Directories.

American Universities
Provides a list of University names with links to their home pages. Also provides links to other similar lists for international, Canadian, and community college sites.

College and University Homepages
 Listings are alphabetic or geographic and provide links to the schools' home pages.  This list now has over 3000 entries and includes numerous colleges outside the United States.

Web U.S. Higher Education
Includes separate categories for U.S. Universities and for Community Colleges.  Lists are arranged by state and alphabetically.  Maintainted at the University of Texas at Austin. 
 

College Rankings

The usefulness and validity of college rankings is highly controversial.  Perhaps the most extensive collection of information about college rankings with links to online information can be found at College and University Rankings, a Website created and maintained at the University of Illinois.

General Information College Sites

CollegeNET
Includes a wealth of information about colleges, financial aid, scholarships, and locating sites that help you prepare for college.  The site notes that CollegeNET lets applicants complete, file, and pay for their admissions applications entirely through the internet. Over 500 colleges and universities including Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and University of Washington have contracted with us to serve their official web-based admissions applications.

The College Board
Includes college application forms, SAT information and registration forms, college selection assistance, information about financial aid, and much more.

Peterson's
Categories include Colleges & Universities, Graduate Programs, Adult/Distance Learning Programs, Training and Executive Education, Private Schools, Career Education/Guidance, Summer Opportunities, Study Abroad.  Information on test preparation and financial aid are also available.

u.s.news.com
Over 1400 undergraduate and 800 graduate schools are searchable by rankings, best values, location, and other criteria at this site.   Information about financial aid, careers for graduates, and application procedures and much more are also included.
