Article Indexes

Milner Library subscribes to over one hundred different indexes. Selecting appropriate indexes is among the first decisions involved in research, but there may not be an obvious choice, and you will probably need to use more than one. Listed below are selected indexes which should prove valuable.

ERIC (Department of Education interface)
ERIC (Ovid interface)
ERIC (FirstSearch interface)

  • The Department of Education interface is free to all users and is the most recently updated. A disadvantage of the DOE interface is that it does not currently connect to Milner's Find It service. The Ovid interface may be preferable for searches requiring extensive boolean logic.
  • The ERIC database includes more than 1.1 million citations going back to 1966. More than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004) are now available for free.
  • ERIC Documents on microfiche are available on Floor 1. Microfiche readers are also available on Floor 1, and microfiche copiers are available on Floor 2. Using the microfiche is the only way to access ERIC Documents produced before 1993

Education Abstracts

  • Education Abstracts indexes and abstracts articles of at least one column in length from English-language periodicals and yearbooks. English-language books relating to education published in 1995 or later are also indexed. Abstracting coverage begins with January 1994. Abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source documents. Full-text coverage begins in January 1996. This is now the best source for new articles, since ERIC has not been updated recently.
  • In some cases, direct links to the full text of the article will appear as part of the citation. If no links appear, click on the  button to determine if the full text is available through another vendor. Clicking this button will open a new browser widonw that will directly link the the full text of the article, if it is available. If the article is not available full-text electronically, you will be given the option of searching the Online Catalog to determine whether Milner maintains a paper subscription.
  • If neither of the above options lead to the journal, it is possible to order a copy of the article by using the Interlibrary Loan online request form.

SPORTDiscus

  • Updated quarterly, SPORTDiscus contains citations, some with abstracts, to information from periodical articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations and theses, research papers and other publishing forms.
  • Since the coverage is international, and the indexing is very comprehensive, Milner Library will not own many of the works cited in this database. To determine if Milner owns a particular journal, click on the title, click on the  button. Clicking this button will open a new browser widonw that will directly link to the the full text of the article, if it is available. If the article is not available full-text electronically, you will be given the option of searching the Online Catalog to determine whether Milner maintains a paper subscription. If Milner does not own the journal needed, use the Interlibrary Loan online request form.
  • The database's records, dating from 1975 to the present, cover sports medicine, exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, training, coaching, physical education and fitness, and other sport- and fitness-related topics. It also provides comprehensive indexing, dating from 1949 to the present, of the Microform Publications collection of dissertations and theses of the International Institute for Sport and Human Performance at the University of Oregon.
Physical Education Index
  • Only available in a paper format published four times a year, with the fourth issue a bound hardcover cumulation.
  • Coverage is given to dance, health, physical education, physical therapy, recreation, sports, and sportsmedicine.
  • Covers over 150 popular and scholarly periodicals.
