Nursing Information: Databases

Major Databases for Nursing

All databases are available from Milner Library's homepage unless a specific URL is given.  The library's homepage can be accessed at http://www.library.ilstu.edu.  Click on find articles on your topic to select a database.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health)
Major index for nursing journals.  Indexes over 500 nursing journals from 1982 to the present. The paper index, in the reference section on the main floor, extends back to 1956.

AEGIS (AIDS Education Global Information Systems)
Available on the Internet via www.aegis.org.  Click on Search found on the left side of your screen.  Provides access to the AIDSLINE database plus other indexes.

Ageline
Available on the Internet via http://research.aarp.org/ageline.  Indexes health, research and consumer information on adults 50+.  For professionals in aging service, health, health, business, law & mental health.  Also includes selected consumer content. 

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Available via www.cdc.gov.  Information for the public and health professional.  Search function produces statistics, reports, fact sheets, etc.

Clinical Trials
Available on the Internet via http://clinicaltrials.gov.  Developed by the National Institute of Health.
Indexes clinical research studies for patients, family members and the public.


Cochrane Library Database
Provides full text sources, unique to Cochrane, that disseminates research findings of, and to, a wide international community.  To access click on Cochrance Library.  The system allows only one user at a time.


Current Contents
Indexes over 7500 scholarly research journals going back to 1994.  Many nursing journals are included


GPO Monthly Catalog  (Government Printing Office)
Available as a Milner database or on the Internet via http://www.gpoaccess.gov/index.html. Names of specific diseases or disorders can be entered.  Milner Library houses many of the sources in its government document collection.  To locate these works see Milner Library’s catalog.


Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)
Provides over 70,000 records on measurement instruments relative to health and psychosocial sciences


Health Source Consumer Edition
Provides references and some full text to over 280 consumer-orientated health periodicals, over 1000 pamphlets and 23 health reference books.  Includes pamphlets from the American Health Association, American Diabetes Association, etc.


Health Source Nursing/Academic Edition
Provides full text to many scholarly nursing journals and reference books.  The nursing database CINAHL indexes more nursing journals than Health Source Nursing. 


Images from the History of Medicine
Available on the Internet via http://wwwihm.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/gw_44_3/chameleon?skin=nlm&lng=en  (no dot after the w).  Provides 60,000 images to the prints and photograph collection of the History of Medicine Division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.  Illustrations cover the social and historical aspects of medicine and nursing


Medline
Major database for medical journals.  Includes many references to nursing journals but not an many as the database CINAHL.   It is included in the PubMed database.  Also available on the Internet via http://www.Pubmed.gov or http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov.  If you search PubMed from the list of databases on Milner Library's homepage you will have the Find it option which will tell you the location of the source within Milner library. 


MEDLINEplus
Available on the Internet via http://medlineplus.gov.  A service of the National Library of Medicine, it indexes consumer health information.  Contains carefully selected links to Web resources, dictionaries, directories, organizations and new sources

National Guideline Clearinghouse
Available via www.guidelines.gov.  A resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

Nutrition.gov
Available on the Internet via http://nutrition.gov.  It directs users to nutrition databases providing references and full text to resources evaluated by trained nutrition experts. 


PsycINFO
Major index for journal literature in psychology & psychiatry covering 1872 to the present.  Includes many references related to psychiatric and mental health nursing

PubMed
Available on the Internet via http://www.pubmed.gov/.  A free medical database from the National Library of Medicine.  Includes the database Medline.  Indexes fewer nursing journals than the nursing database CINAHL.  A few items are available in full text.  If you access PubMed via the list of databases on Milner Library's website you will have the Find it option which will give you the location of the item within Milner Library. 

Thomas
Available on the Internet via http://thomas.loc.gov.  A free index to legislative information on the internet

Toxnet (Toxicology Data network)
Available on the Internet via http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov.  Indexes journal articles, books, technical reports, and papers.  Contains a cluster of databases, including TOXNET, on subjects such as toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas.  A service of the National Library of Medicine.

Virginia Henderson International Library
Available on the Internet via http://www.nursinglibrary.org/Portal/main.aspx?PageID=4011             This database is the realization of Sigma Theta Tau's International goal to offer nurses online access to reliable nursing resources. 

WorldCat
Indexes books, journals (not journal articles), and other materials found in libraries worldwide
