The Eleventh Decade: Illinois State University, 1957-1967by Helen E. Marshall Author Helen Marshall wrote The Eleventh Decade as an update to her Grandest of Enterprises, the centennial history published in 1956. The Eleventh Decade was the first of the so-called "decade" books which followed Grandest. It publication marked the end of Marshall's 32-year history teaching career at Illinois State. Later decade books included A Place of Education and The Thirteenth Decade by Roger Champagne and The Fourteenth Decade by Mark Wyman. The Eleventh Decade documents a period of exposive growth at Illinois State and the transition from a teacher's college to a university. On January 1, 1964, Illinois State Normal University became Illinois State University after several years of sometimes heated debate among administration, faculty, students, and alumni. The decade ended with the retirement of President Bone and appointment of Samuel E. Braden from Indiana University as his successor.
