Marketing a Product in a Country

The following is an outline of the resources covered in the session held in Milner Library.


Country Information

General

Global Market Information Database (GMID)
Provides statistics and information.  For example, you can select a country and examine various economic or demographic information about that country, you can examine the consumption (value and/or volume) of various products in one or more countries or regions, and you can use Browse Reports to access a Consumer Lifestyle report for the country.  You can tailor the time series, unit of measurement, currency, and market unit (total, household, per capita, etc.) to suit your needs.  Data can be printed, saved, or loaded into Excel.

Portals to the World
Part of the Library of Congress' Global Gateway site providing links to resources by country, from business, to media, to society.

Cultural Analysis

CIA World Factbook
An excellent starting point. Profiles of each country of the world. Covers geography, population, government, economy, climate, etc. This site also includes maps that can be downloaded in gif, tif or pdf formats.

Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions
Profiles cultural dimensions in each country.

Refer to the Web sites and printed resources listed in the Country and Regional Information Sources section of the International Business Web page and on the Country Resources for Business library guide.

For some countries there are books with titles containing the words "doing business in."  Search for these in the Milner Catalog.  Also search under the subject heading BUSINESS ETIQUETTE (COUNTRY NAME).

Political/Legal Analysis

Political Risk Yearbook
8 volumes cover the world.  Each has its own call number.  Find these listed in the Country Resources for Business library guide.

Doing Business in Asia (KNC 84 .B87 D65 2005)
Five volume set covering the countries of Asia, focusing on legal and regulatory issues.

Doing Business in Europe (Ref KJE 2045 .D65)
Looseleaf set providing detailed information.

OECD Economic Survey in SourceOECD
The Economic Surveys are also available in print in the library and can be checked out.  Only selected countries are covered.

For company financials, use Academic Universe, the business component.  Typical data sources include Worldscope and Thomson financial sources.  Data includes a balance sheet, income statement, cashflow statement, key ratios, and other financial data.

Trade Policy

International Trade Reporter  Loose-leaf sets covering various aspects of trade:

  • Current Report Up-dates all the following; weekly newsletter  (Reference HF 3000 .I57)
  • Decisions Reports court and administrative regulatory decisions  (Reference HF 3000 .I572)
  • Reference File  Covers import regulations and laws, including major imports/exports, the tarfiff system, non-tariff controls, marketing and distribution, documentary requirements, standards and packaging and labeling, and customs and entry data  (Reference HF 3000 .I573)

Competitive Analysis

Encyclopedia of Global Industries  (Reference HD 2324 .E53)
Concise articles on each industry or product category, highlighting major players (countries and companies), the state of the industry, and the factors that impact the industry worldwide.

Trade data from GMID and SourceOECD

Mergent International Manual  (Reference HG 4538 .M64)
Provides financial data on individual companies, worldwide.
